ANTI-BIAS

I have been working with the Anti-Bias approach since 2009, with a focus on the context of people going abroad for volunteering, study visits or work assignments. I have also worked with school classes, teachers and staff of international organisations. During my time in Kenya I have established the Anti-Bias approach as a tool for non-violent conflict transformation together with the partner organisations of the Civil Peace Service Programme of GIZ. The above video is a testimony from our work with different groups across the country and was produced in the run-up to the 2017 general elections.

WHAT IS ANTI-BIAS?

The Anti-Bias approach first and foremost creates awareness and acknowledgement of differences among different human groups. It looks into racism, sexism, ableism, classism, homophobia, xenophobia, mysoginy to name but a few of the concepts of exclusion. In order to move towards a more just and equal society, we first need to understand the current multitudes of discriminations, where they come from and what one's personal role within them is. Critical self-reflection and honest self-examination form a big part of any Anti-Bias training.

Other concepts to be examined in the trainings include:

UNCONSCIOUS BIAS

In many cases, we are not actively aware of our biases, preconceptions and prejudices. Anti-Bias helps uncovering the unconscious biases and to recognise and work on them.

INTERSECTIONALITY

Also called 'multiple discriminations', intersectionality is a concept coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw that looks into the interplay of multiple layers and categories of oppression.

STRUCTURAL RACISM

One important aspect of anti- and non-racist education is the distinction between the structural and the personal, and understanding and uncovering structural racism.

please note:

As a white trainer who is not experiencing racism myself, my focus is on training groups who likewise have no personal experiences with racism. For diverse groups, I create offers in collaboration with my BIPOC network and after concise needs assessment whether I am a suitable person for the requested task.
